Dear All,

In the first newsletter of 2013 we would like to share with you the 2012 results as well as the goals and challenges ahead for this year.

As you all know, in 2012 we felt a strong economic downturn of our home market with effects in the investment scale of our main clients, REN, EDP and REFER from Portugal. This has reduced the weight of the Portuguese market for Automation business to about 10% of total turnover, an historical minimum.

Important orders

Efacec Automation selected to deliver CLP 500SAS for Algerian electric power substations
Efacec Automation, as a trusted supplier of substations automation solutions, has been selected to deliver the new CLP 500SAS automation platforms to a set of seven substations (2 x 220/60 kV and 5 x 60/30 kV) for the Algerian electric power company SONELGAZ.

 

Efacec ACS Selected to Deliver Outage Management System to City of Griffin, Georgia
Efacec ACS, a provider of smart grid solutions to the global electric power industry, has been chosen by the City of Griffin, Georgia to provide its PRISM™ Real-time Outage Management System (OMS).

 

FDIR technology from Efacec ACS goes live at one of the nation’s largest electric cooperatives
Efacec ACS’ fault detection, isolation and restoration (FDIR) technology went live this morning on Cobb EMC’s distribution system serving over 195,000 meters.

 

JASEC SCADA System Award
Efacec ACS has been selected by Costa Rican utility JASEC (Junta Administradora del Servicio Electrico Municipal de Cartago) to deliver a new SCADA system and 91 remote terminal units (RTUs).

 

Integrated DMS/OMS for DELSUR
Efacec ACS was selected by DELSUR (Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur, SA de CV) to deliver important smart grid technology for management of the utility’s distribution network.

 

Multiple orders from Latin America market, through Efacec branch in Brazil
During the last quarter, Automation business unit of Efacec do Brasil received a set of important orders in the scope of energy automation systems, from which we highlight the following projects.

Deliveries and project implementations

Along 2012, Efacec Automation carried out numerous projects, comprising systems installations, testing and commissioning, all over its worldwide markets.

Among all installed systems, we highlight installations of substations automations systems featuring protection and control for transmission, distribution and railway operators; of remote terminal units for network telecontrol; and of automation systems for hydro power plants.


In the last quarter of 2012, we point out the following implemented projects:
- Automation and control system for Alqueva II hydro power plant, EDP Produção, Portugal
- Telecontrol and automation systems for several substations, EDP Distribuição, Portugal
- Automation system for El Salto substation, Chilectra, Chile
- Automation systems for mobile substations, ANDE, Paraguay
- Telecontrol units for traction substations, Light Metro, Singapore

Completed FATs
Efacec completes the FAT with Venezuelan company CORPOELEC

Throughout the last quarter of 2012 Efacec Automation, in close cooperation with other Efacec business units, successfully concluded the Factory Acceptance Tests for the first set of seven automation systems for the Venezuelan CORPOELEC.

REIVE, innovative laboratory for electric mobility, Portugal
Efacec Automation in the scope of its activity in research and development area, participated in a project of electric mobility, promoted by Portuguese university INESC Porto.

New R&D projects

Efacec Automation is satisfied to announce inauguration of a set of new projects in the R&D field.

An autonomous and continuous R&D activity is a high priority for Efacec, in order to guarantee its competitive and long-term presence in a worldwide market. Nowadays electrical networks are more than just conventional grids to conduct the energy. Environmental sustainability concerns, increase of renewables, introduction of electrical vehicles, between others, bring new challenges to the network and to automation schemes in order to provide an optimized management of all assets.

Therefore Efacec Automation continuous to invest in R&D, participating in new projects in the scope of smart grids initiatives, including electric vehicles solutions.

Efacec ACS will be exhibiting at TechAdvantage 2013 in New Orleans. The TechAdvantage show is the major US event focused specifically on Smart Grid and other technologies for the Electric Cooperative market in the US. We will be demonstrating SCADA/DMS/OMS, feeder automation and the complete line of substation automation and RTU solutions.

DistribuTECH 2013 Conference & Exhibition – San Diego, US
Efacec ACS was again present at DistribuTECH 2013, which took place in San Diego, CA from January 29-31. DistribuTECH is the North American utility industry’s leading Smart Grid exposition.

 
EDIST Conference & Exhibition - Toronto, Canada
Efacec ACS exhibited at the 2013 EDIST conference, from January 16-18, one of the leading combined energy conferences and exhibitions in Canada.
 
CONCOPAN XXXII – Managua, Nicaragua
Efacec ACS participated again in the CONCAPAN conference, held this year in Nicaragua, November 14-16, 2012. CONCAPAN is the major technical convention for Central America and Panama and is hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
