Efacec on the forefront of smart grid solutions in Portugal

EDP continuously demonstrates its trust in Efacec’s smart grid solutions. Recently, Efacec has received a new order for supply, configuration and implementation of an innovative solution that comprises large-scale virtual distribution transformer controllers (DTC).
This solution will support the implementation of EDP's program for the secondary distribution substations monitoring and remote metering of energy boxes installed at clients. The large-scale distribution transformer controllers will be based on the SmartGate software platform, Efacec own technology.

SmartGate is the innovative family in a compact form factor, with distributed autonomous MV automation algorithms that can be deployed with units that present IEC 61850 capabilities and IEC 61131-3 user programming together with core applications functions. With this solution a set of smart grid applications is viable, such as integrated M/LV automation, economical deployment of combined automation, condition monitoring, measurement, metering, power quality and communications.

In the scope of this project, a centralized management solution for operation and management of virtual DTC will be developed. This large-scale DTC will also allow to create subsequent virtual DTC with protocols used by EDP in other smart grids initiatives and projects (like InovGrid phase 1, EPD 2012 and energy boxes).

Efacec is a pioneer smart grid solutions provider, the company has already totalized over 3.000 G Smart units installed and in operation in secondary substations (MV/LV), and more than 3.700 in undergoing projects. For more efficient configuration and commissioning of all equipment a new software application was developed: view4grid. This product was distinguished by EDP as one of the semi-finalists in the 2014 edition of EDPartners awards. Additionally, Efacec actively participates in various smart grid projects launched by EDP, starting with the very first smart grid project InovGrid in 2007.
