Efacec revamps the SAS at the Bulgarian TSO, the National Electric Company NEK

Efacec in Central Europe was trusted by Bulgarian company NEK, with a project to refurbish the substation automation system (SAS), featuring protection and control, at Varna transmission substation. This substation integrates the national power grid and operates with three switchyards with several voltage levels, ranging 220/110/38.5 kV, and one with 6/0.4 kV.

Efacec Automation is providing the automation system, featuring protection and control, for 220 and 110 kV levels. The SAS system, based on Efacec CLP 500SAS technology, integrates Efacec’s bay control units BCU 500 and protection relays from 420 series, as well as protection relays from third parties. At the substation field level, the communication between all the equipment will be performed over the IEC 61850 international standard – enabling the most advanced architecture in the field of power systems automation. The substation will be communicating with the remote SCADA control center over the IEC 60870-5-101 protocol.

This project demonstrates the synergy and close cooperation between Portugal and Romania Automation Competency Center (ACC), as the Efacec ACC in Romania is responsible for engineering works, including project management, and Portugal will supply the product technology.

With installation of Efacec’s SAS solution, the Bulgarian TSO will totally benefit from the advanced substation automation, with powerful and flexible protection and control, together with straightforward engineering and management all over the substation lifecycle.
